Personal Summary
Dr. Jay grew up right here in Canistota, carrying forward a family legacy deeply rooted in this community. His great-grandfather, Amon Ortman, founded the Ortman Clinic, and his grandfather, Dr. Herbert Ortman, became the first in the family to attend chiropractic school. Herbert also spent countless days trying to turn young Jay into a fisherman-but despite his best efforts, the passion never quite took hold.
Jay's father, Dr. Wayne Ortman, has spent more than seventy years raising Angus cattle and enlisted Jay's help whenever he could, yet that passion, too, remained uniquely his own. Though Dr. Jay grew up fishing and working cattle, his heart was always on the field or court; he loved playing any sport he could. He carried that enthusiasm into college, pursuing athletics alongside his pre-med studies at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. He then continued his education at Northwestern College of Chiropractic in Bloomington, MN.
Dr. Jay is certified by the South Dakota Board of Chiropractic Examiners and licensed in chiropractic acupuncture. He joined the Ortman Clinic in 1994 as the first member of the fourth generation and now serves as vice president of the very state board that granted his licensure.
When he's not caring for patients, Dr. Jay treasures time with his wife, Sonja, and their four adult children-Payton, Connor, Will, and Autumn. Any free moment he gets is likely to find him on the golf course….unless it's deer season, in which he briefly trades his clubs for a rifle before happily returning to golf once again.
